Drinking the Kool Aid

This title may be in slightly poor taste but it seems to me that it describes the current state of Lib Dems in this Country. It means becoming a firm believer in something: accepting an argument or philosophy wholeheartedly or blindly.  See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drinking_the_Kool-Aid .

Last night at Council the Lib Dems made 3 attempts to amend my motion against the VAT increase to make it congratulate the Government on their economic policy. Three times they were ruled out of order. Finally I challenged them to vote against it if they didn’t agree with it. Finally that is what they did.

Three months after an election campaign threatening the ToryUsed during 2010 election VAT Tax bombshell Lib Dems in Gloucester and throughout the country are breaking their promises and supporting this regressive tax increase. Their only argument seems to be to blame Labour. Not the banks. Not global economic conditions.

They promised that they could fix the economy without regressive taxation. They said make the rich pay. Now they are making the poor pay.  The wealthiest pay £1 in every£25 of their income in VAT, the poorest pay £1 in every £7.

But the Lib Dems have drunk the Tory Kool Aid and I think that is political suicide.
